Some objects collect and use all data from a data item and therefore you only need to specify which data source and data item you want to collect it from. An example of this is the graph object, which shows all the data that is contained within a data item. In these cases you specify the reference to the data item with a notation "datasource.dataitem" where the datasource and dataitem are replaced with their names as specified in the editor.
